Rail trails for families and e-bikes
The easiest are Rottnest's car-free roads, the Wadandi Track around Busselton and Margaret River, and the Denmark River mouth to Rudyard Beach Road. All are flat or gentle, with towns or cafés close by.
- Youngest riders: Manjimup to Deanmill (6 km, first kilometre sealed), Torbay to Elleker (8 km), Ten Mile Brook from Margaret River, or a short out-and-back on the Sidings Rail Trail from Nannup.
- Close to Perth: the Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail is mostly flat. The Railway Reserves trail has short sections between hills towns, but the south line climbs for about 15 km, so pick the direction with that in mind.
- A full day with no traffic: Perth to Mandurah on the freeway path, with the train back.
E-bikes on WA trails
WA allows power-assisted pedal bikes only: pedelecs to the EN 15194 standard (up to 250 W, cutting out at 25 km/h) or other bikes up to 200 W. Anything more powerful is illegal on roads and paths, and e-bike riders must be 16 or older. Rules can differ by trail and in national parks, so check the trail manager's page before you go.
Touring and bikepacking
WA's big off-road tour is the Munda Biddi, about 1,060 km from Mundaring to Albany. For a first overnighter, try the Kep Track to Northam or Collie to Darkan.
- Munda Biddi Trail: 16 trail towns, 12 free huts, and 15 to 30 riding days. Our guide covers it end to end.
- Kep Track: 75 km from Mundaring Weir to Northam. Stay in Northam and take the 6.30 am AvonLink train back (weekdays only, book your bike).
- Collie–Darkan: 61.5 km, with a campsite at Bowelling Station and a caravan park in Darkan.
- Wild Gravel Trail: a 440 km loop through eight Great Southern towns.
Can you ride from Perth to Albany, or Perth to Bunbury?
Perth to Albany: yes, off-road on the Munda Biddi. There's no official road touring route. To come home, Transwa coaches take two bikes each (book ahead).
Perth to Bunbury: there's no official continuous cycle route. You can ride the freeway path to Mandurah, but we haven't checked a safe way on from there, so we don't publish one. The simplest answer is the Australind train, which carries up to 14 bikes and from 12 October 2026 runs twice a day, every day.
Gravel riding
The Wild Gravel Trail is WA's purpose-made gravel route. The Kep Track, Collie–Darkan and Nannup's Timberline Loop all make good gravel days too.
Nannup is hosting the UCI Gravel World Championships on 10 and 11 October 2026, the first time they've been held outside Europe, and the Wild Gravel event runs in the Stirling Range on 24 October 2026. We list events for context only; these pages are about rides you can do any weekend.
Mountain bike trail towns
Collie and Dwellingup were WA's first accredited Trail Towns, in April 2024, with over 250 km of mountain bike trail between them. Margaret River, Pemberton, Nannup and Kalamunda all have big networks too.
Trail Town accreditation comes from Trails WA with DBCA, and recognises a town as a world-class trail destination. Use the "Mountain bike" filter above for each network, or see Trails WA for individual trail grades.
Coming soon, and proposed
Only the Wadandi Track extension is funded and being built. The rest are proposals with no money or dates yet, so none of them can be ridden.
| Trail | Length | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Wadandi Track, Busselton Jetty to Augusta | ~110 km | Funded ($17.5 million), first contract awarded August 2026, target 2028 |
| Albany to Woodanilling | ~200 km | Proposed in the Department of Transport's Great Southern 2050 cycling strategy (2025) |
| Kojonup to Pingrup | ~150 km | Proposed, same strategy |
| Tambellup to Gnowangerup | ~95 km | Proposed, same strategy |
| Wheatbelt Way, Wyalkatchem to Nungarin | ~70 km | Proposed by local shires; needs funding and a rail-corridor lease |
| Bunbury to Northcliffe corridor | ~200 km | Listed by Rail Trails Australia as a possibility; not confirmed |
Getting your bike there
Perth trains take bikes outside peak hours. Transwa trains and coaches take them for $20, booked ahead. Perth buses don't take bikes.
Transperth (Perth trains, buses and ferries)
- Trains: bikes are fine outside peak times, space permitting. On weekdays from 7 to 9 am towards the city and 4.30 to 6.30 pm away from it, only folded bikes in a bag can travel in the peak direction, and no bikes can use Perth, Perth Underground or Elizabeth Quay stations.
- Buses: no bikes, including rail replacement buses, unless folded and bagged.
- Ferries: bikes any time, four racks per ferry.
- E-bikes: pedal-assist bikes follow the same rules.
Transwa (regional trains and coaches)
| Service | Bikes |
|---|---|
| Australind (Perth–Bunbury) | Up to 14 per train. Two return trips a day, seven days, from 12 October 2026. |
| AvonLink (East Perth–Northam) | 2 per service. Weekdays only. |
| Road coaches | 2 per coach, front wheel off. |
| Prospector (to Kalgoorlie) | Folding bikes only, in a bag. |
Every Transwa bike costs $20 and must be booked by phone on 1300 662 205. Transwa's luggage page charges the same fee for e-bikes but doesn't set out battery rules, so call before you travel with one.
Official maps and where to check conditions
For Perth bike paths, use the Department of Transport's free bike maps. For trails, Trails WA has a page and KML file for most of them. Check DBCA Park Alerts before any ride in a national park or state forest.
We link to these rather than copying them because they're kept up to date.
- Department of Transport bike maps: free PDFs of Perth by area, route maps (Perth to Midland, Perth to Rockingham, the Sunset Coast, Ride through the Hills, Swan Valley), and regional maps including Margaret River. Also on the free Avenza Maps app. Some of the older maps are out of date.
- Your Move journey planner: plans bike routes across Perth.
- Trails WA: the state trail directory, with KML files and alerts.
- Rail Trails Australia: volunteer-run listings for every WA rail trail, including proposed ones.
- Munda Biddi Trail Foundation: maps and the app for the Munda Biddi.

Questions people ask
Which WA rail trail is best for families?
Rottnest, the Wadandi Track or the Denmark end of the Denmark–Nornalup trail. They're gentle, well surfaced and close to food and toilets. For very young riders, Manjimup to Deanmill is only 6 km.
Is there a bike path from Perth to Mandurah?
Yes, about 74 km of off-road path, mostly beside the Kwinana Freeway. The last gap closed in 2022. The Mandurah Line train runs alongside if you want to ride one way.
Can you cycle from Perth to Albany?
Yes, off-road on the Munda Biddi Trail, about 1,060 km. There's no official road route. See our Munda Biddi guide.
Where can I get a Perth bike path map?
From the Department of Transport, free. Its bike maps cover Perth area by area, as PDFs or in the Avenza Maps app.
Are there GPX files for WA rail trails?
Mostly no. Trails WA offers KML files (Google Earth format, which most GPS apps can import) for most trails. DBCA publishes a free GPX for the Munda Biddi.
Can I take my bike on the train in Perth?
Yes, outside peak times. In the weekday peaks you can travel only against the peak direction, or with a folded, bagged bike. Buses don't take bikes.
What is a WA Trail Town?
A town accredited by Trails WA and DBCA as a world-class trail destination. Collie and Dwellingup were the first, in April 2024.

How we made this page. It's built from the official sources below, checked on 8 October 2026. Where two official sources give different distances, we name the one we've used. We haven't ridden every trail here yet, and we'll add our own notes as we do. Trail conditions change, so the trail managers have the final say.
