Wineries
There's no dedicated winery trail yet. Ride the Wadandi to Cowaramup's cellar doors and cafes, or join a guided e-bike tour. Riding drunk is an offence in WA.

    Trailheads and the ford
    Route
Trails WA gives 7.3 km one way, 14.6 km return, from Rotary Park to the Rusden picnic site at the dam, along old timber tramways through karri, marri and jarrah. It was formerly called the Ten Mile Brook Trail and is named after Bunnitj, a Wadandi ancestor.

    Now
The Margaret River ford on the trail is flooded and unsafe; follow the signed diversion (Trails WA, 13 October 2026). The winter routes are rougher, with loose gravel and steeper pinches.
    Dogs
Only from Rotary Park to the Perimeter Road. After that the trail is in the national park, where pets aren't allowed.

  8. A wine ride from town

About 28 kmWallcliffe and Gnarawary areaQuiet roads

Confident riders on e-bikes or hybrids. Trails WA suggests an easy 28 km ride from town past cellar doors; it uses public roads, not a built trail.

    On roads with traffic

    How to do it well
    Route
Trails WA's Margaret River weekend itinerary describes the ride but doesn't publish the roads used. Plan on quieter back roads and the Wadandi where you can, and keep off Caves Road.
    The law
Riding a bike on a road or path while alcohol or drugs stop you controlling it properly is an offence in WA. Taste, don't drink, or book a guided tour with transport.
  9. Boranup Drive

Gravel riders: a forest road through tall karri, leaving Caves Road south of Lake Cave and rejoining it further south.

    What to expect
    Surface
A narrow, unsealed two-wheel-drive road, with corrugations, potholes and cars.
    Getting there
You reach it from Caves Road, so most people drive to the start rather than ride the highway.
    Now
Trails WA says the Boranup lookout was recently damaged by fire.

Bike hire in Margaret River

Hire in town from about $65 a day for a hardtail and $125 for an e-bike, or have bikes delivered from Busselton. Book ahead in school holidays.

BusinessWherePublished prices, per dayNotes
Life Cycle BikesStation Road, Margaret RiverE-cruiser $125; hardtail or town bike $65Helmet, lock and trail map included. No delivery; collect and return Monday to Saturday. 2025 prices.
Burnside BikesDelivers from BusseltonTown bike $60; hardtail or gravel $85; dual suspension $160; electric dual suspension $200; kids' MTB, baby seat or trailer $50Cheaper per day for longer hires. Delivery to Margaret River, Cowaramup, Prevelly and Gracetown about $50 return, with a $300 minimum hire.

Prices as published on each business's site, checked 13 October 2026; booking fees and security deposits are extra. Other shops in town and Cowaramup also hire, and there are guided mountain bike and e-bike tours. We haven't used any of them. In WA, e-bike riders must be 16 or older (Road Safety Commission), so hire firms and tours set the same limit.

Wineries by bike

You can, with a plan. There's no dedicated winery trail yet, Caves Road is no place for a wobbly ride home, and riding drunk is an offence in WA. Cowaramup and a guided tour are the easy answers.

  • No winery trail yet. A 14 km food and wine cycle trail through Wilyabrup, linking to the Wadandi, has been studied for the state government. It hasn't been funded or built.
  • The easy way: ride the Wadandi Track (ride 01) between Margaret River and Cowaramup, where cafes, cellar doors and a brewery sit in or near town.
  • Stay off Caves Road. It's narrow and winding, with fast traffic and few sealed shoulders. Local reports from 2017 to 2019 said Main Roads had looked at sealing shoulders, without funding. Families and casual riders should stick to the Wadandi and town paths.
  • The law: WA's road rules make it an offence to ride a bike, on a road or a path, while alcohol or drugs stop you controlling it properly. There's no blood alcohol limit for bike riders; the test is control. The RAC points out it applies on paths too.
  • Passing distance: WA drivers must give riders at least 1 metre where the limit is 60 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres above that.
  • Guided tours: local operators run e-bike and mountain bike tours, some with brewery or winery stops and transport. Check what's included and the age limits when you book.

Getting there with a bike

About three hours' drive from Perth (270 km). Transwa's SW1 coach stops in Margaret River and carries a limited number of bikes if you book.

  • Coach: Transwa's SW1 runs from East Perth to Margaret River (Charles West Avenue) in about five hours. It doesn't stop at Cowaramup. Bike carriage rules and fees are in our Wadandi guide; book the bike when you book your seat.
  • By bike from Busselton: about 50 km, but the Wadandi has a 22 km gap between Carbunup River and Cowaramup until about 2028, so part of it is on roads.
  • Flying: Busselton Margaret River Airport has had interstate flights on and off. Check the airlines' current schedules.
  • Stay by the trails: the RAC Margaret River Nature Park is next to the Wooditjup trails, a short ride from town.

When to go

Spring (October and November) and autumn (March and April). Summers are warm and dry with fire risk; winters are wet, with about 1,000 mm of rain a year falling mostly from May to September.

Spring

Mild days and wildflowers from September. The Cape to Cape mountain bike race runs mid-October.

Summer

Warm and dry, often high 20s. Ride early, carry water, and check fire danger and Total Fire Bans. Busy in the school holidays.

Autumn

Settled weather and quieter trails after the holidays. Easter is busy.

Winter

Wettest from June to August. Muddy patches on the Wadandi, and the Bunnitj Biddi ford floods. Good for the forest; pack wet weather gear.

Events

  • Cape to Cape MTB, 15 to 18 October 2026: a four-day stage race of about 200 km from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste, with a kids' event on the 14th. The Pines and Wooditjup trails close on the 17th.
  • Gravel: the UCI Gravel World Championships were held at Nannup, an hour east, on 10 and 11 October 2026, with Busselton as the hub. The SEVEN gravel race runs there each May.
