Where to find a job while cycle touring in Australia

Grape picking makes great seasonal work while cycle touring in Australia.

Seasonal employment in Australia is a popular option for many travellers, especially those planning to stay longer than a few weeks. The relatively high Australian dollar, temperate climate, available opportunities and the use of the widely spoken English language make the country an attractive place for visitors to earn a few bucks, but many locals also enjoy working on the seasonal employment circuit because of the flexible and free lifestyle. The availability of seasonal work opens up a world of opportunity for those interested in undertaking a long-haul bicycle tour around Australia because funding such a trip often prevents many people from realising their dreams.

National Championships roll into Victorian heritage town

Day 4 Cycling Australia National Campionships Ballarat 2012. Cycle Traveller. Source: jpxphotography.com

The old gold town of Ballarat in Central Western Victoria is a regular backdrop in films – Lydiard Street has one of the most authentic Gold Rush-era street fronts in the country. But this photogenic town will soon be the backdrop for something quite different; Ballarat is again set to play host to the Cycling Australia Road National Championships. Nestled in the lower western plains of the Great Dividing Range, Ballarat is already a famous tourist destination in its own right, and it's a great place for cycling, on road and off. The Buninyong road circuit used for the road event is recognised as one of the top road racing circuits in the country, while if you're looking for some fun on the dirt, the popular Goldfields Track runs along the mountain range between Ballarat and Bendigo.
