Melbourne is already the envy of cities such as Sydney when it comes to its bikability, but cycling in Australia's second most populated city is about get even better, according to the City of Melbourne council.

The City of Melbourne said Tuesday that work has started on creating a new four-year action plan to becoming a cycling city, targeting the years 2016-2020. The plan will build upon works completed under the 2007-2011 and 2012-2016 plans.

With the draft plan now in the works, the City wants to hear from you about what improvements to cycling infrastructure need to be made over the coming years.

To have your say, visit the Melbourne Draft Plan on the Participate Melbourne website between April 15 and May 8 and share your ideas on an interactive map. You can add new ideas to the map, pinpoint black spots, comment on other people's ideas, and highlight parts of the bicycle network that you think work well and should be replicated.

“Share your ideas on what’s important to you when you’re riding and how we might encourage more people to jump on a bike and ride in Melbourne,” the City council said.

“Our aim is to plan for bicycle facilities and programs where people all ages and abilities feel safe and comfortable to travel by bike. Your views will inform the development of the draft plan which will be presented to Council later this year.”

Significant improvements to Melbourne's cycle network have been made since the first four-year plan began in 2007. Under the current plan, the City hit its target of 15% of all trips into Melbourne's CBD during peak hour made on bicycles, up from 9% in 2008.
