A fledgling bike share scheme is emerging in Canberra, with two automated bike rental stations now located outside two of the city's major hotels.

The scheme, operated by Spinway Canberra, provides visitors and locals who don't own a bicycle with the opportunity to use the city's extensive bicycle network, which includes bike paths to all major tourist attractions and suburbs within the ACT.

Spinway is described as being similar to a bike hire “vending machine”. Users swipe their credit card at the Spinway station, unlocking a bike from the rack for short-term hire of up to 24 hours.

Two stations of four bikes each have been installed outside the Novotel on Northbourne Avenue and the Crown Plaza on Binara Street, and negotiations are currently under way for a third location.

She said that as the bike share scheme was presently small, the bicycles needed to be returned to the same station at which they were hired. However, as more stations open, she said the aim is to begin operating as a 'network' which would allow cyclists to return the bikes to alternative stations at their convenience.

There are three hire periods available starting at a cost of  $11 for one hour, $22 for four hours, or $33 for 24 hours. If the bike has not been returned to its rack after this point, the credit card will be charged $11 for each additional hour (it is a 'share' scheme, after all).

The cost includes a sanitised helmet and a Canberra cycling map, which can be picked up at the concierge desk at the participating hotels.
