Europcar has been outfitting more hire cars with rooftop bike racks and sending them to Adelaide after the car rental company's existing bike-ready fleet was completely booked out ahead of the Tour Down Under.

“Demand for bike-ready vehicles has hit fever pitch with the Tour Down Under rolling into town. We have had to push forward plans to outfit more vehicles in order to cope,” said Ron Santiago, Europcar Australia managing director.

“South Australia will now have the lion’s share of our bike-ready vehicles, while we outfit more vehicles to ensure we can service demand in our other locations.”

The company said it has tripled its fleet of Mitsubishi Outlanders with Thule ProRider bicycle racks due to the surge in demand from cycling fans in Adelaide travelling with their bicycles.

Europcar, which was the first car hire company in Australia to provide vehicles with an option for a rooftop bicycle carrier, says it has experienced strong demand for its bike-ready vehicles in South Australia since their introduction in July last year with the region emerging as a strong cycling-holiday destination.

“We found more and more customers were asking us about transporting bikes safely and conveniently so it made sense to introduce this solution to travelling with bikes,” Mr Santiago said.

“Whether it is a cycling tour of the Adelaide hills or an epic run along the Barossa wine country, we have seen a big uptake in bike-ready cars in South Australia.”
