The route has been unveiled and entries are set to open as cyclists, particularly those in NSW, breathe a collective sigh of relief on the confirmation the inaugural Newcastle Challenge has the all clear to ride.

After some initial planning roadblocks and a name change, Bicycle Network has announced entries to the 160km ride from Gosford to Newcastle will open for members on Monday, September 30, with non-members eligible to reserve their spot a week later on Monday, October 7.

The news comes as Bicycle Network unveiled a scenic and challenging route that climbs its way up out of Gosford towards Peats Ridge before looping back and heading up along the coastal roads to finish at Newcastle's Nobby Beach Reserve.

The event, set to ride on Sunday, February 16, 2014, starts and finishes near Gosford and Newcastle train stations and will also provide route support, including support and gear wagons, course marshals, medical support and first aid as well as rest and snack stops every 25-35km.

Other services, such as the option to have a bag transported to the finish line with any items you may need at the end of the challenge or have nutritional needs sent to the half-way point, are also available.

The confirmation of the event is a welcome one to the cycling community after initial plans to run a Sydney to Newcastle Challenge were put on ice due to the failure of NSW authorities to approve sections of the route leaving Sydney.

Despite the change of plans, Bicycle Network has pulled together what promises to be an amazing ride, with the addition of the loop along Wisemans Ferry Road and Peats Ridge Road set to be a great start to the day. Riders will then stick closely to the coast, pedalling up through The Entrance, Budgewoi and to the east of Lake Macquarie before finishing up with a chance to cool off at Nobby's Beach in Newcastle.

Early bird pricing of $170 is available until Friday, November 15, with entry prices rising to $190 thereafter. Entries close Friday, January 31.

Riders can register on the Bicycle Network's website
